"Toss your dashed hopes not into a trash bin but into a drawer where you are likely to rummage some bright morning". ~Robert Brault
I have started a new playlist for the new year. Some old songs may appear. I called the playlist "A Fresh Start" because it reminds me of something Nick used to do in the hospital. After he got his tracheostomy and he could no longer speak anymore, he had to write everything in order to talk with us. When he first wanted to write I grabbed the closest paper that was handy, which was a sketch pad that Nick was using to draw and make sketches. He wrote on this pad for several days, at one point, stating profoundly that writing in this book was "a waste of a good sketch pad." I was amazed he would worry about such nonsense, but, he was a frugal guy and he did not like waste. Anyway, a few weeks or so into this process, when Nick would fill a page, he would turn to a new page and he would always write, "FRESH START" at the top of the page. I am not sure why he would write this...symbolic maybe, or hopeful that things would soon turn around. Or maybe it was the drugs he was on or maybe it was just my sweet Nick trying to make some sense out so much pain and suffering. Anyway, I guess now I have to make my own fresh start. I know that is what Nick would want me to do. Nick, I love you so much...I miss you more each day. I love you more than a wagon full of puppies. Please come home. Mom

The crack down my chest
A sore no one can heal
Being alone is best
It all seems so unreal
My mind now is faulty
My eyes are like a dam
Tears are comfortingly salty
The pain no doctor can exam

i wrote this, how unfortunate that it reminded me of you. im so sorry
Seester...
As sad as the poem is by Emily, how true. A sore no one can heal. It all seem so unreal. I'm sure the New Year means nothing, other than to close the ugly book that was 2009. But even that seems not right, as it was our last year with Nick, so we should keep the book open, even though it's like ripping the scab off the wound. My hope is that 2010 brings some path to living with the grief for my sister who deserves some peace and serenity out of all this darkness. Love you....
As your son, brother, nephew, cousin, friend....he would want you all to have a fresh start. I wish that for you.
Love,
Joyce
Dear Diane,
It is a fresh start to learn to live again. Nick's efforts to beat this horrible disease would have been for nothing, if those he loved and left behind, don't fight to bring their lives back to normal as possible. I know when the year changed last year, I thought my dad will never see 2009, but I have seen him in my dreams and I know he is okay and is seeing the year in a much better place then he was before he died. So Nick lives on through you, his dad, his sister, and all of those who loved him. All the beauty that this world has is a reminder of how much Nick loved life. He will always live on through the love of his family and friends. May 2010 be the year that the healing begins!
Love,
Mary E
